Find the Skilled Workers You Need

Struggling to Find Skilled Workers in the UK?

Recruiting locally should always form part of a strong workforce strategy. But what happens when the people you need simply aren’t available?

When skilled workers are difficult to find, vacancies remain open for longer, recruitment costs increase and employers can find themselves repeatedly competing for the same experienced candidates.

The impact can quickly spread across a business. Projects may be delayed, existing employees carry additional workloads and opportunities for expansion can be limited simply because the organisation cannot recruit the people it needs.

Why Hire International Skilled Workers?

Access a Larger Talent Pool

Your recruitment market is no longer limited by geography.

International recruitment allows employers to search for experienced workers with the specific skills, qualifications and experience their business requires.

Fill Hard-to-Recruit Roles

Some positions can remain vacant despite repeated advertising and recruitment campaigns.

Expanding the search internationally means businesses can look in markets where those skills are more readily available.

Support Business Growth

A lack of skilled labour can become a genuine barrier to growth.

International recruitment can provide businesses with the additional workforce capacity needed to accept contracts, increase production, expand operations or deliver major projects..

Build Your Workforce for the Long Term

International recruitment can form part of a longer-term workforce strategy, helping businesses develop a sustainable pipeline of skilled people rather than repeatedly reacting to vacancies.

How Does Hiring International Workers in the UK Work?

Hiring workers from overseas involves more than simply identifying the right candidates.

UK employers need to consider the role being recruited, visa eligibility, sponsorship requirements, salary thresholds, candidate suitability and the practicalities involved in relocating someone to the UK.

UK Visas and Sponsorship for International Workers

Employers recruiting workers from overseas will often need to sponsor them through the UK
immigration system. In most cases, the employer must hold an appropriate sponsor licence
and the position must satisfy the requirements of the relevant visa route.

Skilled Worker Visa

The Skilled Worker visa is the principal route used by UK employers to recruit skilled
workers from overseas.

Candidates must have an eligible job offer from a Home Office-approved sponsor and meet the relevant requirements for their occupation. Under the current rules, the standard salary requirement is generally at least £41,700 per year or the applicable going rate for the
occupation, whichever is higher, although different thresholds and exceptions can apply.

Changes to Skilled Worker Requirements

The requirements for international recruitment have become more selective.

From July 2025, most new Skilled Worker roles generally need to be skilled to RQF Level 6, although certain occupations below this level can remain eligible through the Immigration
Salary List or Temporary Shortage List.

New Skilled Worker applicants are also generally required to demonstrate English language ability to B2 level, covering reading, writing, speaking and listening. This increased from B1 for new applications from 8th January 2026.

Understanding these requirements before beginning an international recruitment campaign is increasingly important.

Other UK Work Visa Routes

The Skilled Worker visa is not the only route available for international workers. Other
immigration categories may be appropriate depending on the candidate, occupation, employer and nature of the employment.

Identifying the correct route early can help employers understand whether a position is eligible for international recruitment and what sponsorship, salary or immigration requirements may apply.

Why Employers Are Looking Beyond the UK Labour Market

The UK has an extensive skilled workforce, but employers in some industries can still find it difficult to recruit people with the right combination of experience and technical ability.

Repeatedly competing for the same candidates can leave important positions vacant for extended periods.

For businesses with contracts to fulfil, projects to deliver or plans to expand, international recruitment provides access to a much wider talent pool. It can help employers address persistent skills gaps, strengthen existing teams and build the workforce required for future growth.
